Insomnia

Insomnia – Why Can’t I Sleep?

Insomnia is a sleep disorder that is characterized by an inability to fall asleep or to stay asleep for any quality period of time. This condition results in a lack of focus during daytime activities such as work, driving, etc.

Some common symptoms of insomnia are:

  • Difficult falling asleep at night
  • Waking up during the night
  • Waking up to early
  • Daytime sleepiness
  • Not feeling rested
  • Depression
  • Irritability
  • Anxiety
  • Upset stomach and intestines
  • Increased likelihood of accidents or errors
  • Tension headaches

If it takes longer than 30 minutes for you to fall asleep and you are getting six or fewer hours of sleep per night over the course of three or more nights per week, you may be suffering from insomnia.

You should see a doctor if you are not able to function during the day due to your insomnia. Your doctor will be able to help diagnose the cause of your sleep disorder and suggest how best to treat it. Do not be alarmed if your doctor chooses to refer you to a sleep center for additional testing.
